Robotic Knee Replacement
Dr. Gross utilizes robotic technology when he performs knee replacement surgery. He is specially trained and spend one year learning the benefits of robotics in patient outcomes. “After training in robotics for knee replacement surgery, I can’t imagine doing knee replacement without technology.” Dr. Gross feels the most important thing about knee replacement is re-creating proper knee mechanics to ensure patients can achieve excellent range of motion and stability with their new knee. For this reason, Dr. Gross utilizes the Mako robot during his surgeries.
“What patients don’t realize is the wealth of information available to the surgeon during a robotic knee replacement, it allows the surgeon to really customize the way the knee is done.” Dr. Gross feels that with this technology, knee replacement recovery is much faster, much more predictable and patients have higher long term satisfaction.
“Robotic knee replacement really allows me to make sure I can take care of each and every patient no matter what deformity they have and get them back to doing what they love.”
Anterior Hip Replacement
Dr. Gross used the anterior approach during his hip replacement surgery. He is specially trained in this technique. “For me, anterior hip replacement has so many benefits, as a patient it allows you to recover much faster, and as a surgeon it allows me to be much more accurate.”
Anterior hip replacement refers to the way in which the surgeon gets down to the hip joint to perform the replacement, in anterior replacement the surgeon goes in between muscles in the front of the thigh. “In Anterior replacement, we can avoid the dissection of the large gluteal muscles that is done in traditional hip replacement, which leads to less pain and dysfunction in the recovery period.”
During surgery, Dr. Gross uses X-rays to assist him in placement of the hip replacement components. “I explain to patients, using X-ray during the surgery from the anterior approach is crucial for me to ensure I am restoring their hip biomechanics to get them back to full function.”
Revision Hip & Knee Replacement
Dr. Gross specializes in revision hip and knee replacement. “Unfortunately, hip and knee replacements fail for a variety of reasons. This can be due to infection, fractures, stiffness or instability. Oftentimes these diagnoses lead to the replacement need to be redone.”
Dr. Gross is specially trained in evaluating patients with a painful or unstable joint replacement to discern whether it needs to be redone. “Often patients come to me with a feeling of exhaustion, and sometimes mistrust due to being seen by many surgeons in the past who are unequipped to evaluate if something is wrong. Many patients have been suffering for years. It is one of the most valuable services I feel I provide, to simply sit and listen to the patient and give them my expertise, and often some hope for what has been a long and painful journey.” Dr. Gross is equipped to evaluate and if needed to revise your joint replacement to allow you to get back to life.
